Winding rill

A Yorkshire Family Garden

North Yorkshire

A large family garden on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, designed for a busy, sociable family who wanted a space that could keep up with their changing needs and celebrate one of the most beautiful landscapes in England.

The site had its own story to tell: a Grade II listed wall running through the middle of the garden and a barn outbuilding, both of which reflected the farming history of the place. Rather than working around them, they became central to the design.

The garden takes its inspiration from Yorkshire's knitting tradition, the interlocking geometry of cable patterns reimagined as winding paths, rills and sculpted hedging. It gives the garden a sense of discovery as you move through it, with spaces for dining, lounging and quieter moments emerging naturally along the way.

Planting is bold and seasonal, chosen to bring colour and energy throughout the year. A garden that genuinely reflects the family it was made for.
