Full garden design is the heart of my practice, working through the seven stages below from first conversation to first season in the ground. If you need something smaller, a single border or a planting plan, I am happy to help with that too.
We start with a conversation, in person or by phone, and an initial site visit. The purpose is to understand what you're hoping for, how you use your outdoor space, and what isn't working at the moment. The result is a written client brief, a design quotation, and a decision on whether to proceed together.
A thorough topographical survey is carried out, either by myself or by instructing a specialist surveyor, measuring the space, assessing the soil, studying the light at different times of day, and getting to know the surrounding landscape.
I develop an initial garden design that captures the direction and feeling of the space, including a plan, illustrations, and images to communicate the planting approach and hard materials. We'll meet to talk it through, and your feedback shapes everything that follows.
With the outline design agreed, I develop everything in full detail: construction drawings, material specifications, lighting and water features for the hard landscaping; and planting plans, specifications and nursery schedules for the soft. These documents give you a complete picture of the finished garden and form the basis for appointing a contractor.
I can recommend trusted landscape contractors from my network, or manage a tender process in which a shortlist are invited to quote for the build. Either way, I'll help you find the right team for your project and your budget.
I remain involved throughout the build, monitoring progress, ensuring the design is being realised as intended, and working through any changes that arise on site as the garden takes shape.
Once the garden is complete, I provide clear guidance on how to care for it through its first season, including two dedicated site visits. Every garden evolves as it grows, and I'm always available for follow-up visits as yours comes into its own.
